Married Couple
A trophy wife said to her husband, "I'm twenty nine years younger than you are, as you well know; we've been happily married for forty-two years, and in that time, I just realized, our combined ages have doubled!" How old were they when they were married?

1/2 ages?
m = man's age when married
w = woman's age when married
m = w +29 [eq 1]
2(m + w) = (m + 42) + (w + 42) [eq 2]
simplify [eq 2]
2 m + 2 w = m + w + 84
m + 2 w = w + 84
m + w = 84 [eq 3]
subsitute eq 1 for m
w + 29 + w = 84
2 w + 29 = 84
2 w = 55
w = 27.5 [eq 4]
subst eq 4 in eq 1 to get man's age:
m = 27.5 + 29
m = 56.5
When married, man's age is 56.5, wife's age is 27.5
(and I did this without Hayden's help!)
With Hayden involved you probably still be stuck explaining what "trophy wife" means.
Rachel has solved two puzzles in a row. Make sure you wake up early tomorrow to beat her up on the next puzzle. Easy one is coming up.
