Mysterious Pattern

After the April break a mysterious drawing has been discovered on the asphalt behind the school.

Was it an illiterate toddler, an artistic child, an infatuated teenager, or an adult trying to communicate with the aliens? After careful observation, one second grader screamed: "Wait, I see a pattern!"

What is this pattern?
You can submit your word description of the pattern via the comment form below or feel free to email me the snapshots of your drawings.

Thank you to our friend Peter Tze for sharing this nice puzzle.
Answers accepted all day long on Friday May 20th and Saturday May 21st, on our Family Puzzle Marathon. They will be hidden until Sunday morning (EST) and everyone who solved it will get a puzzle point. Please, explain your answer.

The numbers one through five normal and mirrored.

This pattern is the numbers 1 2 3 4 5, each with its mirror image attached on the right.

So the next picture in the number 6 with its mirror image attached on the right (a sort of upside down heart with circles on each bottom side), 7 and its mirror (a triangle pointing down), 8 and its mirror (four circles), etc.

Someone has written out the numbers 12345 and then flipped it in a mirror and written the mirrored image right beside it. If you cover the left hand side of each image (splitting it down the middle), you can see 1 2 3 4 5.

These are digits 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 molded together with their mirror images.

The images are the digits from 1 to 5 along with their mirror images! Covering the left half of each image makes this easy to see.

The sequence consists of the numerals 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 and their mirror images. Cover the left hand side of each element of the sequence, and you will see the numerals. Cover the right hand side of each element of the sequence and you will see the mirror images.

The message is 1 2 3 4 5. Each number is written with its mirror image to the left of it, or in Geometry-speak, with its reflection. :)

They all are symmetrical vertically. The right side of each makes a number, the first one is 1, the second 2, and so on through 5. The next one would be 2 6s, backwards and forwards, smushed together.

Each drawing is a composite of a number and its mirror image. The first is two 1s, the second two 2s, the third two 3s and so on.

on the first two figures, the horizontal line is at the bottom.
If you think of an imaginary vertical line between the two first figures and the two following, there is a mirror effect and the horizontal is in the middle of the figures. The heart becomes eight.
The last figure, the horizontal line is now at the top and it is a mixed of M and 8.

Is there an explanation?gang..

The second grader recognized the numerals 1 to 5 with their mirror images.

The little second grader recognized numerals 1-5 with their mirror images.

OK...Looking again..There is a vertical symetry on each figure and we can read 1 2 3 4 5.

Annie said...

The figures are the numbers 1 through 5, from left to right, with their mirror images.

if you fold each symbol in half along its line of symmetry (each symbol has one vertical line of symmetry) and line them up in order with the folded side on the right you get the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 in that order.

You all are geniuses. I have to admit this note was lying in my kitchen for a few days and I couldn't figure it out. It looked as a collection of hearts, Ms and circles.

A puzzle point for: Stu, Bean, Wang, -lex-, SteveGoodman18, kj, Donna, TotalNerd, Kim, anne-marie, Patricia (her second grader), Annie, Lynnet.

Darn...I figured it out yesterday and forgot to submit my entry. I challenged all of my kids and my second grader was able to figure it out with my kindergartner helping! Obviously, its the numbers 1-5 and their mirror images.
