Our shadows follow us, creeping behind our feet and staining the floor with our distorted silhouettes. Could one separate from his/her shadow? Could one run away loosing the shadow behind at least temporarily?

That's right, it would make your shadow completely disappear.
But could your shadow still be present, but not be attached to you at your feet?
In order to achieve that you will need to levitate :)
According to Douglas Adams you can just jump off a high place and keep missing the ground.

My husband loves the "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy".
Jumping up is one of the answers I had in mind. Another one is standing at the edge of a canyon. Your shadow will be somewhere at the other side of the canyon, but it won't start from your feet.
I think this is another point for Alin.
