The unusual Indy 500 race

Three Indy 500 racers were standing and chatting after the big race. One of them, Danica Patrick, mused that it could be great to have a race where the winner is the one who finishes last. In fact, she said, I will give $100,000 to any of you two, whose car will come last to the finish. Hearing this, one of the racers, the famous driver and puzzle solver Kalonni, jumped into the car and put the pedal to the metal. She won. How?

Assuming you mean who won the bet, I would have won by purposefully causing damage to my car, making it impossible to continue the race, thereby coming in last place...

This could definitely be a solution.
However, there is another one, that keeps both cars and drivers safe.

The real answer is excruciatingly simple.
Share the puzzle with your kids at dinner time.
Perhaps it would be easier for them to guess.
We are making some assumptions that are not in the puzzle...........................................

She won the money and came second.

Nope, Kalonni came first...

I was disqualified for jumping the gun and got red flagged because no one gave me the go ahead to begin the race...

or I never passed the qualifying my time.

So did I win the bet because the other driver finished the race before me, therefore, I lost to him, even if I didn't finish in last place?

They were driving each other's cars!

You got it, Alin!

So, smart Kalonni jumped into the other woman's car and made sure her own car gets to the finish line last.
